Rico 'Scorpio' Rodriguez's tyrant removal services are needed again, and this time it's in the fictional Southeast Asian island named Panau. Rico is in Panau in pursuit of a rogue agency operative that has made away with oodles of the agency's cash. Rico will not get any agency support for this mission, so he will have to rely on support from the local resistance fighters for intel and the black market for weapons and equipment.
In Just Cause 2, you can unleash some righteous mayhem by use of sabotaging methods and generally bringing grief to the incumbent, tyrannical government.
Ahead of the game's release, Square Enix has released a playable demo to discover the many changes in the Just Cause universe.
The demo is set in a small part of the Panua islands and the players get 30 minutes to unleash destruction or simply explore the island. In the full game, the island is promised to cover an area of 400 square miles that can be explored using any of the game's 100 land, sea and aerial vehicles. For those who you think that Rico is too cool to use conventional means of transport, there are several alternate means. Rico can use a combination of his trademark grappling hook and parachute to cover large distances quickly. Alternatively, the player can also hitch a ride on top of civilian vehicles and this method extends to all other means of transportation in the game.
Just Cause 2 uses methods that are similar to games like Red Faction Guerrilla to unlock new areas and missions. Destruction of key government and civilian installation adds to the Chaos score and it is often necessary to achieve a certain score before the next mission is available. At that point the player has an option to continue with exploration and destruction or trigger the next mission in the game's central plot.
The game has collectable or salvageable parts to upgrade the arsenal of weapons, vehicles and personal gear like body armour. You can also find a relatively quiet spot to call in the black market chopper. Using the black market services, players can buy new weapons, vehicles and gear or improve existing ones by expending salvaged upgrade parts. New items become available with the black market as you complete secondary objectives like blowing up key buildings and locating upgrades.
30 minutes is not enough to explore all that the demo has to offer. It is a good indication that the full game could be infinitely fun in a mindless, sandbox-style kind of way.
