I like acrylic paint for staining clothing/fabrics, myself...

I'll get a nice dark cherry red in a tube or bottle at the art store, remember these dry a shade and a half darker than the paint appears when wet. I'll get a dark blue or black also, this is to darken the color if it dries too bright.

Once you have the color you like, thin it with water into a soupy consistency--not too much water, or the color will not be vivid enough.

For a splattery effect, you can fling it on with a paintbrush--or dampen the bristles of a stiff brush and flick your fingers across these, allowing the droplets of paint to make fine flecks.

You can also drip and smear the paint on with rubber gloves.

Just allow it to soak in and dry, and you're good to go!
