I like your suggestion of just using dye. Like the kind you use for tie dye. You would have to soak it in vinegar to make sure it doesnt run in the washing machine and turn your whole costume pink. Then you wash to get the vinegar smell out. cold water though so it sets.
Then maybe splatter a bit of paint over that so it looks more like you just killed someone?
