Sin Nombre (2009)
Beauty wrapped in ugliness wrapped in beauty wrapped in ugliness. It's a film which substitutes the flashiness these types of movies usually have (Meirelles, Lund and Boyle, I'm looking at you) and replaces it with moments of reflection, both soft and heavy. The violence is teetering on unbearable but for as many torturous moments as there are there are just as many moments of warmth, stemming from believable relationships of friendship and love. The story is helped by tremendous acting; Edgar Flores and Paulina Gaitan are extraordinary and revealing- heartbreakingly real. Through its themes of extreme human suffering, director Cary Fukunaga's debut film is filled with incredible photography and endearing storytelling.
Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended.
