Hm, let's see. Some of my favorites, other than Brakhage:
- Kenneth Anger
- Maya Deren
- Jan Švankmajer
- The Brothers Quay have done some interesting work certainly worth checking out
The early Dada guys had some great stuff: (obviously) Buñuel/Dalí's
Un chien andalou, Jean Epstein's
The Fall of the House of Usher (1928), Man Ray's
L'Étoile de mer (1928), Marcel Duchamp's
Anémic cinéma (1926), etc.
One of the more impressive short films I have ever seen is a 1926 piece by Dimitri Kirsanoff called
Ménilmontant.
There is a wonderful DVD set that Kino released called
Avant-Garde: Experimental Cinema of the 1920s and 30s that I would seriously recommend if you're interested in getting into more experimental work. Quite a few of the ones I've mentioned are included, actually (
Ménilmontantis on there).
If you haven't seen
The Man with the Movie Camera (1929) by Dziga Vertov, that's definitely worth a watch, too.
