Atari's Asteroids - the movie
Asteroids could soon be landing on a cinema screen near you, with Universal announcing plans to make a film version of the classic Atari videogame.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio won a four-way bidding war for the property, which initially hit arcades in 1979 and revolved around a spaceship attempting to navigate an asteroid field.
That was pretty much it for plot, so screenwriter Matthew Lopez (Bedtime Stories, Race to Witch Mountain) has his work cut out in terms of scripting.
Universal's won the bidding for feature rights to the vintage Atari vidgame "Asteroids" and set up the project with Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Fox and Sony were also bidders on the project.
Atari launched "Asteroids" in 1979, and the 2D game became one of the most widely known titles as the vidgame biz blossomed in the decade that followed.
Di Bonaventura's recent projects include "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," "Imagine That" and the upcoming "G.I. Joe" for Par.
