Have you ever played War with a deck of cards?
It's mostly luck...The only involvement you have is choosing who to do battle with...If you are level 2 with no weapon and no shield, you probably shouldn't battle someone who is level 4 with a club and an ax.
The more times you win, the more points you get...The more points you get, the more levels, items and abilities you gain...The items and abilities you get are also determined by the luck of the draw.
If you have more than one character, your involvement increases because you choose which one would be the best against each different opponent.
I know it's all silly, but I'm having quite a bit of fun with it :)
