House Of 1000 Corpses and Ginger Snaps are two that are pretty seminal in regards to American horror cinema. As a long time horror fan these really kicked my ass with their fresh approach to tried and true genre conventions.

Inside was a really dark, intense film bringing the slasher film back to life.

For shear popcorn fueled fun you can't go past Demon Knight (1994 but close enough).

Valentine gave us a decent throw back to the 80s slasher without the smug condesending self reflexive tone of Scream.

Ted Bundy and The Hillside Strangler were fantastic serial killer flicks ditching all the bullshit "how to join the FBI" CSI styled cliches to give a really fucked up insight into the mind of a killer.

More recently Romero gave us his best film in over 10 years with Diary Of The Dead. A way deeper film than Cloverfield or [REC].

The Midnight Meat Train was a killer adaption of Barker's work (the best since Candyman IMO and my favorite along with Nightbreed).

Thats some of the shit I've dug anyways that doesn't include remakes (because as good as a lot of them were they are more filler to me inbetween true genre flicks).
