If you are afraid of the pain, I'd make certain to avoid area where the skin is close to bone (wrists, ankles, breastbone, hips, shoulderblade) as this hurts a lot more than tattooing over muscle (biceps, calf, thigh, forearm)

Go big! most people's first tattoo is something they love for a while, but almost always wish it was bigger. Get color. Do your research, find the best tattoo artists around you.

And like hacelikewoah says, get something personal - you don't need to have artistic ability either. Go to your artists BEFORE your appointment and give him/her your concept... the artist (if he/she is worth a damn) should be able to sketch out your idea before hand - that way you can make any adjustments BEFORE making it permanent.
