i think simplicity was the problem ... and you're right as far as how they would have to trim even a simple story to make it fit into the timeframe of a film ... but i have to say - i like kiddie lit - i've been reading a lot of it lately - screening books to see what my kid is ready for or not - and i have to say - youth fiction has come a long way. far more interesting and imaginitive than a lot of what came before.
a short while ago i read the 1st 3 narnia books intending to reread the series - but half way through A Horse and his Boy (or whatever it's called) i completely lost interest.
(i used to recommend these books to everyone !)

Have you tried the Taran books by Lloyd Alexander?
Also old, but I love the first 2 books. Especially the second.
I've always mentioned them as Lord Of The Rings for children. :)
