Pretty much the last time DeNiro was good in anything IMO. Kind of a last hurrah to all those urban psycho parts.
But I thought this was better than the original. Scorcese kept a much better pace on the film, and Nolte, Lange and Lewis were a much more sympathetic family than the original one had. And a nice bit by Joe Don Baker as a good ol' boy PI, and cameos by some of the originals- Mitchum, Peck and Balsam- gave it a little fun to break up the intensity. The best part is that Scorcese used the original Bernard Herrmann score, and had Saul Bass create the title credits.
