Just recently The Wizard of Gore remake was a surprising success in the Chrono household. The boyfriend and I expected it to be abysmal, but it was a great surprise. I know I've already recommended it, but I will CONTINUE to recommend it until everyone sees it. :D
Also, I'd say that American Beauty was a surprising discovery for me. I was a senior in high school and I had watched it before its critical hype. It was the first movie that I had ever seen that actually made me close read film and consider it part of an art form. It's interesting thinking back on it - That movie honestly affected the way that I look at films now and really inspired me as a movie snob.
Prior to that, there was Pulp Fiction. I had heard the hype about it, but it was the kind of movie that's best experienced through viewing. I was still in high school and it was like nothing that I had every seen before (ie Tarantino specifically did NOT use mood music and instead used sound track to create mood - a technique that either I had never noticed or never seen before in movies).
