I really have to agree with you there. If you watch the movie
closely, it's not even necessarily about gore. Miike's film is more about the deconstruction of man, male sexuality, and purpose/drive.
In regards to
most disturbing... I don't really think that "disturbing" has to necessarily do with gore. The two most disturbing films that I have ever seen are
Visitor Q and
Blue Velvet (they're FANTASTIC films - favorites, actually, but disturbing as all hell).
As for most gory...
Dead Alive,
Evil Dead, and
Evil Dead 2 all revel in gore for the sake of tribute and humor. They're all incredibly successful movies that I don't consider particularly disturbing, but I find really gory.
