I loved the first movie. In fact, I loved just about everything about the series. That would explain why I have all nine seasons on DVD and gobble up everything X-Files. It would also explain why I expected so much more from this movie. I mean...c'mon. I've been waiting for years for this movie, but it wasn't one that I expected or wanted or, more importantly, liked.

(I don't think anything I'm about to type qualifies as spoilers, but I would rather be safe than sorry. There could be spoilers ahead.)

For those who didn't like the "mythology" aspect of the series, they should like the content of this movie. There isn't a whiff of that stuff present, which might explain why I didn't like the movie. I loved the "mythology" and was thrilled every time Cigarette-smoking Man, Krycek, or a UFO showed up on the screen.

That being said, I did enjoy the stand-alone episodes, and as I wrote in an earlier post, this would have made an okay one with some editing. The problem was that everything about the movie dragged and seemed forced - the acting, the storyline, the bon mots, the climax (if you can call it that). As for the complaints about shoddy special effects and/or no CGI, I was kind of pleased with that. Plus, there was really no need for it because the storyline didn't support it. And if I were Mitch Pileggi...well don't get me started.

Also, there seemed to be too much "timely" stuff in this movie. A pedophile priest, stem-cell research, gay marriage (just a glancing mention), Scully's arguments with the priest at the Catholic hospital where she worked, and a political "funny" moment seemed to overwhelm everything. I could have lived with about half that stuff, but it seemed that Chris Carter and the writers didn't want to leave anything out.

Personally, I would have left the Scully/hospital storyline out. Other than a REALLY WEAK connection to the psychic storyline, it was pointless. I know someone will say it led to Scully's "realization" moment, but who the hell cares? If after all the crap she saw/experienced with Mulder over the years didn't help, I don't think some cryptic message from a jacked-up psychic would do the trick.

I was thoroughly disappointed in this movie (as if you couldn't tell:)). If it's any indication of the direction The X-Files is moving in, I vote for no more movies. And it hurts me to say that.
