I'm not talking about a movie making you take the leap from mainstream movies to more serious films. [Not to insinuate that I even remotely think that Donnie Darko would be put in the latter category anyways.] I'm talking about people saying that it changed their life. That Donnie Darko actually changed how they look at life and made them re-evaluate their own philosophies and attitudes. I mean, Donnie Darko was basically a Twilight Zone episode. I don't see the "depth" and "deep meaning" that people heap onto the film.
It's not sci-fi in terms of aliens bursting out of chests or laser guns going "PEW PEW PEW," but it's most definitely sci-fi; just set in modern times. If time travel doesn't fit into the broad genre of sci-fi, I don't know what does.
