Yeah, that's definitely true.
With Creep I thought that it could have been so much better. There were times that it seemed to be trying to outdo Hills Have Eyes (the operating table scene) and I honestly couldn't get past the fact that I just didn't believe that she would get stuck in the subway system like that.
Also - The characters were more caricatures (2-d rich bitch, 2-d gross coke-head, 2-d black guy, 2-d homeless people) than actual characters. There was no one that I cared about and wished he had snuffed them all. Not to mention, I didn't find the Big Bad to be actually threatening.

I'm glad I brought up Shallow Ground because I was wondering if and why people liked it. It just felt like a cheap production that didn't really go anywhere. But I agree with Des - It's all in what you expect. I didn't know that Shallow Ground or Severed were going to be low-budget film school projects, so I was disappointed when I found out that they were.
