A pretty naive view i'd say..
I would say the 'majority' of cops start with the notion that its a decent job/has benefits and they might have a chance to do something positive. At the rookie stage very few are of the 'asshole'/abuse of power' type'
So they get on the job - some of it is good and a lot lot of its not so good. Firstly, though they are the upholders of law and order, a fair few of those they are trying protect threat them like shit on their shoe..also the laws they are trying to enforce don't really work as well as they do on paper once it gets to court.....and another their hours are damn anti-social meaning the only people they end up hanging with are...other cops...before long its an 'us and them' mentality. which to be honest isn't unreasonable since 90% of those that they have to deal with are junkies/scum/criminals and 99% of the shit out of them are lies.....
So spending most of your waking time (work hours) in this envionment changes - had for the most part not in a positive way. ....personally i'd say cops are good at dealing with criminals but where the line crosses and they have to deal with people who don't spend much of their time in and out of jail thats when u see em at the worse..of course this is pretty simplistic but you get my point.
I live in Ireland and i'm talking personally and things may be different in America/Main land europe etc tec.
