Across the Universe
What a glorious train-wreck of a motion picture. The camera, choreography and lighting are second to none. Every image, every detail is sumptuous.
Too bad everything else is completely hollow. The story is laughably stupid. There is no character growth or even an enjoyable story arc. The central conceit of the film as pantomime of Beatles songs fails inherently because it's the songs you know by heart all sung and performed by people you couldn't care less about.
I can't say I hate it, because it was sooooo visually striking and at points it almost feels like a parody of a Broadway musical, so I'm torn about a proper rating. But I can say unequivocally that is you want a modern, trippy reinvention of the Beatles catalog, go see Cirque Du Soleil's LOVE, it's fantastic and trippy and authentically beautiful in a way that Across the Universe cannot be.
6/10
