That's what made him an instant star because he showed amazing ingenuity and visual flair on a budget of nothing. No one makes an action film for $4000 quite literally 1/100 of what would be considered a "low budget film."
The story was weak, I give it huge props because the imagery and themes are like a tex-mex filtered spaghetti western and the story is the first film in the Trilogy that continues with Desperado & Once Upon a Time in Mexico which were made with Millions of dollars.
I understand not thinking it was awesome, because it ain't, but it is an important film.
I just watched
Black Book
Paul Verhoeven's Dutch language WWII themed flick is a gem. And excellently complicated tale with relentless action, tension, tragedy, sex and actual (and unexpected) romance. Some of Verhoeven's best work, and I say that as a fan. The Acting is top-notch. The more I contemplate it, the more I like it.

I understand that part. It was just a huge let down, probably because i saw 2 and 3 first.
