10. Eraserhead - Wierd, uncomfortable film to watch. While not overtly scary, its imagery stays with you.
9. 'Salem's Lot - The vampire kid floating outside the kid's window scared the hell out of me. The film version of Barlow has to be the ugliest film vampire to this day, and the sound he makes as he is being staked is unforgettable.
8. Hellraiser - Barker's themes of sexuality and torture, especially in this film (which he himself adapted from the novella), shock me to this day.
7. The Hills Have Eyes - I would hate to find myself in the utterly hopeless, violent situation the characters in this film face.
6. The Fly - Likely one of the most disturbing movies to come out of the 80's (I realize its a remake, the older film is freaky too), its themes work on many deep, primal levels.
5. Jaws - I love this movie, but hated it as a child. However, it is one of the first films to truly scare me. I remember avoiding going out past 3 ft. at the beach because of this movie.
4. Event Horizon - Sort of like a Clive Barker story on an abandoned spaceship, and not sucky like "Hellraiser: Bloodline". I expected straight-up scifi when I first saw this, but was pleasantly surprised. Although it's not the most popular film, it had me thinking for days after I saw it.
3. Night of the Creeps - Why is this on here? Because it's damn freaky. Yes, it may be a cheap 80's cinema take on a zombie film, but it combines 2 things I love to see in horror flicks: zombies getting their heads blown off and aliens that infect people.
2. Cabin Fever - This one is tough to watch. It takes the Cronenberg-ian theme of fear of infection, adds paranoia and a sense of entrapment in there with a lot of violence, making for damn good horror. (Plus Shawn from "Boy Meets World" is in it, he's my hero)
1. Alien - I've seen this movie like 50 times, so it's not scary anymore, but I still feel it is the scariest movie ever made. I love the pace of this movie. Some complain that it's boring, but the slow pace in getting to the planet, to get the ball rolling greatly adds to the ominous feeling throughout. Very good acting, sets, music, sound effect, everything.
EDIT: Damn it! I forgot "The Descent". Not sure where it fits in, but thats a great one too. Very hopeless/disturbing. Plus, there is no "happy" ending, which is nice to see from time to time.
