If you can find one that has a focus you're interested in, you can pass the time well enough. I frequently hang out in a chat room that's for internet broadcasters. Most of the people know each other quite well and people pretty much get along. A good group of "regulars" is essential.

What few jerks that do show up people ignore. They get bored and movew on.

That all said- nearly every chat room IS lame. You gotta find a good one.
