Just my opinion of course
I agree with you. I like to buy (rather than rent or anything else). However there is lots of media on the internet that is not commercial. For example, have a look at the Internet Archive, under their Moving Pictures section. They have lots of video - including old/public domain films but also episodes of the Computer Chronicles etc that are downloadable. It is ok to watch these things on your computer monitor, but sometimes it is nice to watch them on the TV, hence the need to convert to DVD.

Personally, I don't download copyright movies because DVD's are cheap, I prefer the quality and like having a collection of DVD's with their cases/artwork etc. And I want to support the release of cult/horror films because I want to see more films released, especially older/more obscure titles.

But there is a lot of media in the AVI format that is not copyrighted movies - eg video podcasts, and media similar to what can be found on archive.org. A lot of this stuff CAN'T be purchased (and is provided willingly by it's creators at no cost, electronically). For this stuff, the tools that have been mentioned in this thread are very valuable. And it is in that spirit that I have provided advice/links.
