Ravenous (1999)
Ravenous is a tasteful combination of survival, legend, and cannibalism seasoned with dark humor. Guy Pearce plays an Army captain who is transferred to a fort in the Sierra Nevada foothills which is home to a motley crew of soldiers and Native Americans. Soon thereafter, Robert Carlyle shows up with a frightening tale of a traveling party who was stranded in the mountains. It’s a very well scripted movie and easy to get caught up in the insanity.
A solid cast and a unique soundtrack (that truly enhances the movie) make this a very overlooked film and a must see in my opinion. - cactus

Thank you :) Yes, I recognised a few there and can probably count on both hands the ones I have actually heard of and can count on one hand those I actually saw.
"Family Games" gave me nightmares for months after and may not necessarily be underrated - just hard to watch!!! :eek: Not for the graphic gore in it (none there?), as its left to the imagination of the viewer, but the cold way in which the perps operate. And that dismissive/indifferent *tipping over the side of the boat* scene near the end - boy oh boy!
I'd rather psychological horror to in ya face gore anyday!!
Two others I would have liked to have seen on the list were:
1) Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? - classic psychological horror (again!)
2) EL dia de la bestia (Day of the Beast) - a wicked Spanish film - but that one *IS* obscure!!
I suppose it is all relative. I class underrated as movies that *I* thought were brilliant, were on release to the general public (and would be recognised by most people) but classed as a *flop* in said movies. A flop because people had preconceived ideas about what they were going to watch (due to biased and bigoted comments from film critics beforehand) and therefore disappointed. Also a flop because the content was either too graphic, or the plot was too *deep* or too *superficial* for them.
As a group our interest lies in the horror genre - many of you are into more obscure horror films that I havent heard of - like I am sure some of you havent heard of El dia de la bestia (??). Some of you may not even think "....Baby Jane?" is horror - but I class that as a classic psychological horror movie. It is underrated because some viewers only saw two brilliant actresses playing out a thriller. It's the cruel and *insane* way in which one character treats the other, who is completely helpless (like the guy in the wheelchair in TCM!!).
Think of Christian Bale (in The Machinist) who had to lose tons of weight for his character, Joan Crawford had to do the same, to allow Bette Davis to drag her across the floor by her hair! There was no CGI in *those* days!!!
So, our interpretation of *underrated* is subjective and relative, yes?
