It is about his youth and I, personally, liked the actor(s) picked to play him.

I also quite liked the film - it was atmospheric and the end twist does fit in with his vengeful psychopathic state of mind!

I'm still angry with them changing the ending to "Hannibal" the 2nd movie (plus Jodie was replaced by Julianne!) - I'd have rather had the psychologically horrific ending from the book.
I can't stand either ending; personally, it felt Harris didn't know his own characters anymore at times. It would have been one thing if it was a better book, and had a better build up, but Hannibal just didn't hold up to the previous books, in my opinion. BUT, I would have preferred the ending of the book to the absolutely ridiculous ending of the movie.
