The Wicker Man is Lovecraft without the tentacles, a man's struggle to figure out a world whose gods came before his and whose occupants threaten to destroy his values. Videodrome is always recommended and the Criterion edition is really nice. I always stand behind the Gojira boxed set, because it was a foundation for a lot of films and has a lot of emotional impact. It's also a Criterion level product you can buy for under 20 dollars most places. The Hollywood Horror Legends box for 28 bucks on Amazon gets you six really good pieces of thirties horror, with Mad Love and Doctor X shining as standout examples of a gutsy era. Many of the 50 movie sets out there have some excellent stuff, both obscure and classic. 50 Chilling Classics for example, has Deep Red, Bad Taste, Horror Express, Hands of a Stranger and a Bucket of Blood among others on it. The current Reanimator box is well worth the cash and showcases what might be the best Lovecraft adaptation out there, other than Gordon's Dagon, which doesn't really deserve to be dumped on so much. For building a collection, these are a good foundation, and all good values.
