I thought that it was far better than any of the sequels, and did a great job of capturing the mood - heat, dust, isolation, dark and dank, eventually blackest night and sheer horror.
Leatherface was too demonized, IMHO. One of the reasons that the first film was so good was that he was (almost) a sympathetic character. The new TCM had Leatherface as a typical relentless unkillable slasher antihero. I wanted to see him dance too.
If it were to be as good as the first one they would have had to bring Franklin back.
