Teen Gets Machine Blade Embedded In Hand In School
Student's Hand Was Stuck In Clay-Mixing Machine For 3 Hours
Downers Grove, Illinois - A teenager was home from the hospital Monday night, after being severely injured at school in a bizarre accident.
During a ceramics class Friday, Alex Lawrence, a sophomore at Downers Grove North High School, got his hand caught in a machine that mixes clay. He dropped a utensil in the machine while it was mixing the clay and reached in, to get it.
A metal blade embedded in his hand, trapping it in the machine for three hours. He says he couldn't have gotten through the ordeal without the help of his teachers.
"They were standing there giving me support, keeping me calm,” he said. “I was pretty tense from sitting there for three hours with my hand in a machine."
Surgery to remove the metal from Lawrence's hand took another three hours.
