Raging Bull
Martin Scorsese's second best movie, the best sports movie ever, best bio-pic ever, and one of De Niro's best performances. At one time this was real close to making my top 5 of all time.

Not since the 9 hour cut of Greed has there been a more faithful adaptation of a written medium. I'd go so far as to say that this isn't an adaptation, it's a straight translation of the comic books to film. And besides AKIRA, it's the best comic book movie ever, and remains one of the best uses of black and white after colour came around (yeah, even better than you, Wizard of Oz!)
