Unfortunately, all of the really good Oscar flicks won't be on DVD in time...except for the best one: The Departed. Return, listen to me: You Need To See This Film.
Babel comes out on Tuesday (like Austin said). Get it. It's spectacular.
Little Miss Sunshine is essential viwing, it's the only really light-hearted Best Picture film.
Get United 93 if you guys have balls, but it's extremely hard to watch. Very tense, very sad.
The Illusionist is awesome. I'd check it out if I were you, I think it's your type of movie.
Don't get An Inconvenient Truth for the party. It's a really, really good documentary, but you wouldn't be able to really watch it with friends.
Cars (especially) and Monster House are both really fun.
The only one out that I haven't seen is Flags of Our Fathers, but from what I hear it's a good one to check out.
It may be a good idea to check one out in theaters for the party as well, take a trip to the cinema.
The Last King of Scotland
The Queen
Blood Diamond
Children of Men
are all good, and big, Oscar movies I can vouch for.
