I think the Dawn of the Dead remake would have been really cool had it been titled and written as something original.
But what's so great about the original is the cheezy but sickening make-up and gore effects, the funhouse music (conducted beautifully by Goblin), and the overly acted drama and black humor.
And then the almost completely serious, dark-toned remake came along. Now I will say that the remake was good. Not great, but enjoyable. The fact that this was the re-imagining of the original turned me off, though, and it's too bad a more lighthearted approach wasn't taken.
