It's a sad state this day 'n age.... years ago most people wouldn't hesitate to help out a hitchhiker if they had a spare seat.
On one occasion when I hired a van a couple of weeks ago to move some things to my new place. My dad came with me and on our way back around 10:30 pm we passed a guy thumbing a lift, we were passing through the town written on the sign he was holding. No way was I gona give him a lift even though the van was empty. Just don't trust strangers. My dad said just drive on, hitchhickers are too dodgy these days, they'll probably try something... afraid I agreed with him.
When he was my age, he wouldn't have hesitated to help someone out.
