Larry was Larry Foley, an Australian heavyweight boxing champ who retired undefeated with more than 30 title defences nuder his belt and a record setting purse in the 1870s of 1,000 Pounds.
somehow he got referenced in a poem or something and it fell into the popular lexicon, and I've always loved it
