I'd agree to an extent with D's point.

Last night I heard a speaker named Ed Rodman, who was one of the student leaders of the non violence movement in 1960 and worked closely with King. One of the points he made was that it was unfortunate that King became so mythic and that the wider movement, and all the people involved, got left out of history. When King died, the movement sort of fell apart because it had become too much about one person.

That said, I think of MLK day as a chance to reflect on all these people and all these struggles - King stands in for all the others!
