It's visually arresting. Bava started as a cinematographer and it shows. The composition and art direction have clearly inspired Guillermo Del Toro, Tim Burton, Peter Jackson and numerous others.
The carriage ride through the woods is wonderfully stylized and the castle and crypt designs are brilliant. Barbara Steele is at her Femme Fatale best, but...
Don't expect a masterpiece of storytelling... or even a film that makes any sense. I'll forever love it but I always recommend it with a that caveat.
