Continuity? Does it really need that? Especially when considering Zombie's remarks that the film isn't a remake, but a "reimagining". Bringing back the girl who played Jamie Lloyd(Laurie's daughter) to play Laurie is an odd choice.
Like you, I think its mainly just for publicity. Also, this choice will age the Laurie character. She was in high school. Now she has to be either in college, or even later in life.
