Sounds like whoever you were talking to is pretty young..."I know I'm cool"?!? That's gotta be just about the most UNcool thing you could ever say. I'd have told 'em that from their response, your first impression was clearly wrong, then threw 'em in the junkpile.
Although your assessment of myspace in general seems pretty accurate, only going on what I've seen, the place seems full of attention seeking, self absorbed/obsessed people.
I couldn't be bothered with myspace.
Why? So I can show people my MAD skills in throwing together pre-rendered art? I don't need people to "Be my friend" and/or analyse/critique my life, I've no interest in putting my taste in hobbies, music and movies on open display just so some lonely losers can assume they've something in common with me, I don't need validation about my poetry or writing skills, or to agree with my general outlook on life, I don't want or need anybody reading my so called "personal" thoughts. Blogs are stupid shit too. Don't need people telling me how hot I am or not, and most of all, I don't need stupid asshole friends (yeah, "real" ones) posting shit that they could just tell me in person.
That pretty much sums up what I don't like about myspace.
I wouldn't take anybodies...ANYTHING...to heart, IMO, if you're on myspace, 9 times out of 10, you're probably talking to a fucking idiot in the first place.
I'd only ever use myspace as a promotional tool, or event planning, and have it BLOCKED for all those I didn't intend to see it (is that even possible? probably not, right? ) I've a friend who's spoken to, and met up with a couple of rappers when they were performing here (er, yukmouth and somebody that was on his tour), which I suppose is cool if you're into that genre and want to try talking to some of them at the risk of looking like a suck-up fanboy. Of course now, he's the sydney weed hookup for a few of them, which pretty much means I am...hm...maybe there'll be a few tickets in it for me, maybe not, couldn't much care.
