i'm tough on kids shows...and i see a lot of them - i want to know what my kid is watching. every now and then something clever comes along (fairly odd parents rides the fence - it can be typical one second and have some fairly sophisticated humor the next)
in most cases the makers of kids shows see it as a throw away genre - "its kids - they wont know the difference".. but the smart ones do.
i'm happy and proud to say that my kid responds to the better shows .. he gets a lot of the jokes that are aimed a lit higher than his head.
the worst thing a kids show can do is try to be too hip for its own good.
when a show looks like it doesnt know how clever its being - thats when it works ..
the physical difference is subtle but speaks volumes ..
a little too much emphasis on a word here - a pause there... etc ..
its like a critic i read once said about the films of bill forsyth (local hero, Gregorys Girl) .. the films are funny because the characters have no idea that they are funny.
