The huge difference is the religious factor. Most of our horror films (aside from a few exclusive oldies and newer ones) are based around heaven/hell jesus/god/the devil or an overall christian moral. Japan and most other asian cultures do not have the same religion and most of their stuff is based more around folk lore that we are simply not used to.
Do you think that Samara would be so freaky had we seen her most of our lives? or heard stories of her? Probably not.
