Well, it was made after 1970, so by the message board's definition it's modern horror (although no one really pays much attention to the category descriptions).
As far as it being a quality film that still works, yes, I think it's a classic of its type. I watched it a few years ago and it still scared the crap out of me.
The very first time I saw it I was just amazed at how frightening and intense it was. It's not so much a story picture as a picture whose story sets up a relentless series of shocks and scares. Similar to "American Werewolf" in that respect, I think. It's really about the scares.
