How old are you?
I loved them a few years back, read the first 6. Then I started to grow out of them....still cool books, but kinda childish in places.
If you're under 14, I say check them out (starting with the first, Cirque du Freak). If you're older than that...what the heck, check 'em out anyway. You might like them. I was obsessed when I first started reading 'em.
The movies rights were bought a few years back, but still no work on production...
