Do you actualy know anything about the history of 'goth'? I'd saw not. 'Goth' grew out of the punk movement in the early '80s, and was defined by it's style and the music. "...an intelligent, intellectual, a person with a strong literary background who could carry on an intelligent conversation." These things had nothing to do with it. That can be an element of it, but just like anywhere else there are people dump as posts involved that you can't avoided.
