It might be a bit popcorn, but I'd say Poltergeist is a good view for anybody just getting into horror. Solid, primal scares without the kind of extreme gore that takes a bit of indoctrination. Bava's Black Sunday is also rich, intriguing and fairly risque for its time, so are the AI Poe films with Vincent Price. They're not Poe, but they're all something special. And for a good exotic scare, I'd say Ju On. These are all movies that help a person better appreciate the genre and sort the wheat from the chaff. Though I would agree with the STE on following your instincts. The more you follow them, the better they develop one way or the other. You can only rent Dracula's Curse or Hell's Highway once.
