It's good start to finish: the robot is ridiculous but quite endearing, the three friends are likeable characters (remember geeky Laborteaux from Whiz Kids, and Kristy Swanson is still hot), 'Elvira' from The Goonies is one seriously ugly old shotgun-wielding bag, the dad is a horrible bastard, the basketball scene is a showstopper and then there is the ending... ludicrous, improbable but still lots of fun.
Mostly, this film finally succeeds as a doomed horror love story. Not poncy stuff like Dracula, but more in the vein of the downbeat Return of the Living Dead III that followed.
