i find that bbc productions (the one's i've seen) rely on entheusiastic performances rather than slick production values.
i like the inventivness of the effects and set design.
when i was a kid i didnt like them much either but i since adjusted my expectations accordingly.
another good BBC production was the CS Lewis Narnia series.
