No, you are right MM. Its the PS3 controller alrite. It was the initial concept controller which Sony had made when launching the PS3 for the very first time. But they re-designed it into the PS2-controller shape later before the E3 expo, so that people will find it easier to handle as its similar to the PS2 design.
The boomerang controller was criticised by many as the biggest drawback for the PS3, so Sony hurriedly ran back to the PS2 controller design and remodelled it a bit into the new PS3 controller.
