well - i've said it before and will again - IMHO LotD was a Romero masterpiece - it just wasn't what you wanted. . . but in fairness, none of the dead trilogy is what audiences expected - - - i mean, in 1968, who was assuming Ben gets shot in the end? - or that an African American guy is our hero? - no one! And in 78, who's expecting a pie-fight with zombies? or the vaudeville shopping sprees? - no one! in 85, who's expecting this incredibly claustrophobic film - especially after the wider space of Dawn? or the brutality - or the gore? - no one!
So, LOTD wasn't a huge action slaughter fest- nor was it a bleak 'zombies=evil' film. .. i think romero said to this country exactly what it needed to hear - don't go looking at THEM as evil, look in the mirror!
