Why didn't James Cameron keep making films like this?
There was some good character development in the second one; but you're right, often that seemed to take a backseat to the special effects and that usually leaves me cold. Yet it didn't get anywhere close to the point that many films get to these days where the special effects are the ONLY thing there; there was still an attempt to make a smart, emotional film that didn't completely rely on the special effects to pull it through. Overall, I would agree. You're right; the first one is the darker film and the smarter of the two films, in my opinion.

Now I have little use for the third one.... there were some cool individual scenes, but overall, it was a huge disappointment. There wasn't any real attempt to make the characters stand out in that case.
