That's because a lot of Irish people immagrated to the US, especially during the 1840's. You see, the English occupied Ireland from 1169-1938. During this time the British had the Irish farm their own land for English consumption leaving the Irish with the barest crop, the potato. When the potato blight hit Ireland it caused a famine because the English were taking the other crops. Over 1 million Irish people died. Another million immigrated to the US. They kept immigrating for a long time.
