I think it's best to look atthe series like this...
Halloween 1, 2, 7 , 8 go together. That's the Laurie Strode stroyline. Watch those 4 and only those 4 in that order and it will make sense.
Halloween 4 & 5 go together. That's the Jamie Lloyd storyline. They go together with each other, but there are plot gaps between these 2 and the 4 mentioned above.
Halloween 6 is sort of on it's own. It's the Thorn storyline. And it goes in to what Michael is and where he came from. His origin basically. (I have always got the impression that this was originally intended to have a sequel follow it up and tie up this storyline, but obviously that never happened.)
Halloween 3 should be looked at completely seperately from all of the others. No Michael Myers, no storylines ties whatsoever.
I think if you watch them with this in mind, it'll make a little more sense. Just realize there are storyline gaps in some of them so some of your continuity questions are unanswerable.
