While it's far from being a favorite of mine (in fact, it's not even one of my favorite vampire films) I have to give props to Near Dark. Along with Martin (a much better film, by the way) it was one of the first films to deal realistically with vampirism. As Elvis said, it does away with the tired conventions entirely, which was a wonderful idea at the time. Unfortunately, in my mind there are some elements that drag it down, chief among them being the ridiculous blood transfusion scenes.
